Seven seats to watch

As election day arrives, these are seven constituencies to watch:

Bradford West will witness a contest between Marsha Singh, the sitting Labour MP, and Zahid Iqbal, the Tory challenger. It has been a traditional Labour seat but there is a considerable amount of disquiet over the poor performance of Singh and Iqbal as a successful businessman may win in a constituency that desperately needs some political leadership.

Glasgow Central is a two way contest between Anas Sarwar for Labour and Usama Saeed for the Scottish National Party. It was previously held by Mohammed Sarwar but this will be a close contest between the two as Saeed is mounting a strong challenge to Labour in this seat.

Stoke Central is a safe Labour seat that has a high number of representatives from the BNP in the local council. Tristram Hunt has been selected as the Labour candidate. He is a historian and intellectual but is from outside of the constituency. He should win the seat but number of votes that the BNP wins here will be a sign of the extent of support for them.

Barking is the seat chosen by Nick Griffin of the British National Party as the seat that the BNP have a chance of winning. He is against Margaret Hodge of Labour. Labour have 39 seats on the local council and the BNP has 11. It would be difficult for Griffin to win but the number of votes that he secures will indicate as in Stoke Central the extent of support for the BNP in one of their most popular areas.

Bethnal Green is a three way battle between Roshanara Ali for Labour, Abjol Miah for Respect and Ajmal Masrur for the Liberal Democrats. It is traditionally a safe Labour seat, but George Galloway won it at the previous election. It will be between Roshanara Ali and Abjol Miah but will depend on who votes for Masrur and how this affects the other counts.

Birmingham Hall Green could see Salma Yaqoob elected as a Respect candidate against Roger Godsiff for Labour. It is a safe Labour seat but Godsiff will face a tough challenge from Salma Yaqoob who is well-respected in the area.

Gillingham and Rainham is one of the seats that requires a small swing to the Tories for the Labour candidate to lose it to the Tories who in this constituency have chosen Rehman Chishti as their parliamentary candidate. If Chishti wins on the night, it will be an indication that the voters have swung towards the Tories.
